Let a ball go at the top. At each of eight rows it bounces left or right, and it ends up in one of nine slots along the bottom. The middle is where it lands most often. The edges are where the bigger numbers sit.

Why the middle is crowded
To reach the far left slot the ball has to bounce left eight times in a row, and there is only one way to do that. To reach the centre it needs four lefts and four rights in any order, and there are seventy ways to do that. Same coin flips, very different odds. That pattern has a name, the binomial distribution, and this board is a small working picture of it.
